Obituary for Carlos A. Santos
Carlos Santos, 71, of Ludlow, MA died tragically on Friday May 18, in Ludlow, Massachusetts. He was the beloved husband of Benvinda Santos for 43 years, and the devoted and loving father of Lurdes Santos of Boston and Joachim “Jack” Santos and his girlfriend Hilary of Ludlow. He was also the cherished brother of eleven siblings including Adelino Santos and his wife Lisdalia of Portugal, Otelia Santos and her late husband Antonio of Portugal, the late Jose Santos of Portugal and his late wives Alcina and Olivia, Ernesto Santos and his wife Eulalia of Chicopee, the late Orlindo Santos and his wife Maria Judite of Holyoke, Olinda Santos and her husband Julio of Portugal, Palmira Santos and her husband Virgilio of Portugal, Joaquim Santos and his wife Maria Rosa of Ludlow, Fatima Martins and her husband Manuel of Portugal, Antonio Santos and his wife Margarida of Holyoke, and Fernanda Costa and her husband Adalberto of Portugal. He was a devoted son-in-law to Amelia Lourenco and her late husband Jose of Ludlow. He was also an adored uncle, nephew and cousin to many.
Born and raised in Guarda, Portugal, Carlos was the son of the late Antonio and Lurdes Santos. He immigrated to the United States in 1974. He lived in Holyoke prior to moving to Ludlow in 1978 where he was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Parish. He was a founding owner of Ludlow Central Bakery, which was established in 1978, and he was well known to customers and the whole community.
Carlos was an exceptionally warm, kind, and selfless person who was a great friend to many. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family and cared deeply about helping others. He also enjoyed visiting Portugal, was an avid soccer fan, especially of Benfica, loved making wine, gardening, and taking care of his immaculate lawn. He was a member of the Gremio Lusitano Club in Ludlow and the former Holyoke Portuguese American Club.
Funeral services for Carlos will be held on Friday, May 25th at 9:00am from Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Elizabeth Parish followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours are on Thursday from 4:00-7:00pm and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carlos’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) or the Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance 1 Ashburton Place, Suite 1101, Boston, MA 02108.
