Obituary for Joanne R. Martin
Joanne R. (Bafus) Martin, 84, of Ludlow, passed away at home on October 23, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. Joanne, daughter of the late Carl E. and Sarah Bafus, was born in Endicott, WA on September 15, 1933 and has lived in Ludlow for 60 years. Joanne was very active in Town Government both as a precinct member and Warden during local, state, and national elections. She worked for many years at Alamac Knitting Mills in Indian Orchard and later for Mass Mutual. In 1980, she left the workforce to assist in the care of her grandson(s).
Joanne was a sports fan, especially hockey and enjoyed watching her grandsons play the game from their young age of 5 with Ludlow Hockey Association, teen years with Team New England and the Springfield Pics, and on to their college age. She was affectionately called “Granny” by all the hockey kids. She enjoyed playing the slots at various Casinos, as well as playing card games on Friday nights with her Paradise Creek friends, in the afternoons with her senior center friends, and especially with her family on holidays and at family gatherings.
Joanne was sadly predeceased by her husband of almost 60 years, William H. Martin, a son Keith H. Martin and a grandson, Jeffrey Martin Urban. She leaves her loving daughter, Nira Flatley and her husband Larry of Ludlow, her grandchildren Edward Urban and his girlfriend Dianna of Lynne, MA, Lisa Sunter and her husband Brian and son Cole of Ludlow, Melissa Flatley of Philadelphia, PA, Brian Flatley and his wife Lily of Boston. She also leaves her beloved and adored great-granddaughter who brought her so much love and joy, Alexis Urban Sunter.
Joanne also leaves 2 sisters, Elaine Poffenroth of Edmonds, WA and Aileen Johnson of Endicott, WA, her sister-in-law Sue Bafus, of Endicott, WA and her loving God-child Heather Bafus of Spokane, WA. She leaves several nieces and nephews and many loving friends. She will be missed by her Paradise Creek friends, including buddies Joanne and Bob, Sandy, and longtime friend, Virginia.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 27th in Ludlow Funeral Home with Chapel Services beginning at 10:00am followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours are Thursday evening from 4:00-7:00pm and precedeing the service on Friday from 9:15-10:00am. Donations may be made in Joanne’s memory to The Ron Stephens Memorial Fund c/o Veteran’s Services 488 Chapin St. Ludlow, Ma. 01056 or the Veteran’s Organization of one’s choice.
