Obituary for John P. Dietrich
John P. Dietrich, 63, of Monson, passed away unexpectedly on June 7, 2018. Born in Springfield, son of Eleanor (Diehl) Dietrich and the late Richard Dietrich, he grew up in Wilbraham and was a 1973 graduate of Minnechaug High School before eventually settling in Monson. John joined the Springfield Fire Department on January 3, 1977 where he was a dedicated firefighter for 32 years earning the rank of Lieutenant before retiring on May 19, 2009. In the 90’s, John participated on a team with his department that competed in the nationwide competition The Firefighter Combat Challenge who became the New England champions and finalist in the nationals. Upon retirement, he returned to college earning his Associates Degree in Accounting and graduating with honors. In his spare time, John was a talented master carpenter, building many houses, and enjoyed the outdoors. He loved camping in Otis, biking, hiking the Appalachian Trail, and traveling to the beach, especially Hampton Beach; but his greatest love was of his family and his career. John was the beloved husband of 39 years to Debra (Desmarais) Dietrich; a loving father to Michael Dietrich and wife Shari, of Warwick NY, and Sarah Dumas and husband Jonathan, of Palmer; a cherished grandfather of Abigail Dietrich, and Lilly, Elliott, and Quinn Dumas; and also leaves many loving extended family members and dear friends including members of the Springfield Fire Department, and his best friends and neighbors Dave and Lillian Berthiaume. Funeral services for John will be held on Wednesday, June 13th. Visiting hours will be from 8:30-10:00am in Ludlow Funeral Home followed by a service at 11:00am in Faith Baptist Church in Palmer and burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. For those who wish, donations may be made in John’s memory to the charity of one’s choice.
