Obituary for Laura (Cordeiro) Roxo
If you’re about to throw away that used aluminum foil, stop!
Think about our mother: Laura Roxo, who entered eternal life on Monday, April 30, 2018, and reunited with our father Antonio Roxo. Her spirit is carried on by us seven children, Peter Roxo, Joe Roxo, Fernando Roxo, Saozinha Roxo, Zezinha (Maria) Vadnais, Margarida Carbonell, and Paul Roxo, and our spouses as well as 19 grandchildren, and 15 great grand children.
We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from our mom during her 95 years. Among them:
• Never throw out used aluminum foil. Wash it and use it a second, and third time.
• And if an item is on sale, buy at least twelve.
• Also, if a neighborhood cat takes up residence in your yard, buy cat food to coax him to stay. So he can chase away the rabbits in your garden.
• Be strong and resilient. It shows true strength to have something terrible happen to you or someone you love, and still have the courage to keeping living your life like nothing has happened.
• Care about the right things. Our lives and resources are finite. And you just can’t care about everything. Seek to care about the right things.
• Choose the narrow path. Many will choose the broad, well-trodden path. Our Mom never did. Her values always dictated her decisions even when they were unpopular.
• Discipline is a virtue. Self-discipline ought not be feared, but nurtured.
• Don’t fear change. Our mom and dad moved our family to America in 1966. Through the experience and her example, mom taught us not to fear change, embrace and make the best of it.
• Forgive. Wrongs happen and mistakes are made. Sometimes, those decisions hurt. But not granting forgiveness only harms yourself.
• Take care of the elderly. The sunset is no less beautiful than the sunrise.
• Seek God. Some people choose to reject God. Others choose to ignore Him. Mom taught us to seek Him.
And as the old saying goes, “If you seek, you will find.”
Funeral services for our mother will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 9:00am from the Ludlow Funeral Home with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours are Friday evening from 4:00-6:00pm. It was the wish of Laura’s family that in lieu of flowers please make donations in her memory to: The Northampton Community Gardens, 51 Prince Street, Northampton Ma or online @nohogarden.org.
