Obituary for Maria Alina (Chanca) Melo
Maria Alina (Chança) Melo, 87, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2017 in the comfort of her home and surrounded by her loving family. Born in Maçal, Do Chão, Portugal, she was the oldest child of 5 siblings and upon the early passing of her father, Maria Alina aided her mother in raising her younger siblings. She was a longtime Ludlow resident where she was a devoted communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church and worked for over 25 years at Tambrands before retiring. Maria Alina was extremely talented at knitting, quilting, gardening, cooking, and baking and put all of her love and perfection into everything that she did. Maria Alina was the beloved wife of 68 years to João Melo; a loving mother to Helena Braz and husband Orlando, of Ludlow; a devoted grandmother to Jeffrey Braz and Tiffany Duchesne, and Hayley Braz Jorge and husband Steve Jorge; an adoring great-grandmother to Haylo and Londyn Braz, and Hudson and Calvin Jorge; a dear sister to Palmira Nunes, of France, Maximina Tomas, of Florida, Jose Mendes Chança, of Brazil, and the late Beatriz DaCruz; and also leaves many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Funeral services for Maria Alina will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 10:15 from Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours will precede the funeral from 8:30-10:15am and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maria Alina’s memory to Shriner’s Hospital for Children 516 Carew St. Ludlow, Ma. 01104.
