Obituary for Victor Petrolati
Victor J. Petrolati, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 5, 2018 at the age of 99, with his wife and son by his side. Born in Ludlow, son of the late Attilio and Amelia (Albonetti) Petrolati, he was a lifelong resident and 1936 graduate of Ludlow High School and a former President of his Class. He was the first in his family to attend college and received his Engineering and Business Degree from Northeastern University in Springfield and his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Western New England College. Victor was a proud United States Army Veteran of World War II and a member of the “Greatest Generation.” He was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers where he served in the 2nd Engineer Amphibian Brigade and was deployed to the Pacific Theatre; in Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. He was awarded the Bronze Star and various other medals and citations for his service. He was honorably discharged in 1978 as a Lieutenant Colonel after 20 years of active and reserve service. Victor was employed by the U.S. Air Force at Westover AFB for many years as Chief Engineer for Construction and Maintenance and as the Base Fire Marshall and was a registered Professional Engineer and Land Surveyor for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In the community, Victor was a member of the Springfield YMCA, the American Legion, the Retired Army Officers Association and the Disabled American Veterans. He was also a faithful communicant of the former St. Mary of the Assumption Parish and currently of St. Elizabeth Parish. From a personal standpoint, he was an avid golfer who played year round without leaving the State and a follower of the Red Sox, Bruins and Patriots. He always enjoyed family get-togethers, seeing the newest members of the family and drinking red wine. Victor was the beloved husband of 75 beautiful years to Yolanda (Mantoni) Petrolati; a devoted father to his loving son Victor Petrolati Jr. of Arlington, Virginia; and a dear brother to the late Amedeo (1999) and Americo Petrolati (2006) who both owned “Popes Paint and Wallpaper” in Ludlow for over 50 years. He also leaves many loving nieces and nephews and their families as well as extended family members. He will be deeply missed by all. Funeral services for Victor will be held on Saturday, January 13th at 11:00am from Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 12:00pm in St. Elizabeth Parish followed by burial with military honors in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours are on Friday from 5:00-7:00pm and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Victor’s memory to the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis (themiamiproject.org).
