Obituary for Abel Afonso
Abel Afonso Boacas, 90, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully, at Baystate Medical Center, on May 23, 2017 with his loving family by his side. Born in Covas de Barroso, Portugal, he was the son of the late Antonia Afonso Boacas. Abel served in the Portuguese Military and worked as a stone mason for most of his life. Abel immigrated to the United States in 1984, settled in Ludlow, and worked for many years at G and G Construction before retiring. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fátima Church and will be remembered by all who loved him.  Abel was the beloved husband of the Aurelia Gomes Afonso; a loving father to Maria Emilia Gomes and her husband Arlindo Gomes, of Ludlow, to Maria Amalia Martins and her husband Joaquim Martins, of Ludlow, to Anna Paula Goncalves, of Ludlow, to Antonio Abel Boacas and his wife Gilsa Costa; a devoted grandfather to Pedro Gomes and his wife Ela Gomes, of Ludlow, to Robert Gomes, of Ludlow, to Michelle and David Porter, of Murrieta, CA, to Tiago and Tanya Martins, of Ludlow, to Michael and Jennifer Goncalves, of Ludlow; and a beloved great grandfather to Christian and Michael Gomes, of Ludlow, and Lilliana Santos, of Ludlow. Abel was a dear brother to the late Bonifacio Afonso and Bertilia Afonso, all of Portugal. He also leaves many nieces and nephews, and several extended family members and dear friends both in the United States and Portugal. Funeral services for Abel will be held on Friday, May 26th at 9:00am from Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Our Lady of Fátima Church followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours are on Thursday evening from 4:00pm-7:00pm.
