Obituary for Abimael "Abi" Mestre
Abimael Mestre passed away suddenly Monday morning April 11th. Abi was born on December 18th, 1982 in Humacao Puerto Rico. He was a loving son to his mother Eva Lopez and his father Ismael Mestre. Abi also loved and cherished his baby sister Monica. They moved to Springfield in 1986 when he was 4 years old. They then moved to Ludlow in 1990 when Abi was 8. He spent the rest of his life in Ludlow, where as a quiet, shy freshman at Ludlow High School he tried out for the wrestling team. Wrestling became Abi’s passion and he worked tirelessly to become a 2 time Western Mass Champion and All-State selection. He graduated in 2000 as a key member of that championship team. His teammates were so important to Abi and his family. He dearly loved his coaches Jeff Peterson and Alan Gates who he remained close with the rest of his life. Abi was so proud of his accomplishments and his family never missed a match to watch their son compete. Abi received a scholarship to wrestle for coach Anibal Nieves at American International College. Under the guidance of Nieves, Abi enjoyed a very successful career highlighted by a second place finish in his region and a berth at the NCAA Div. II Championships. During this time he developed a strong relationship with Coach Nieves and Abi considered him his brother. After college Abi was still eager to compete. He walked into Fighting Arts Academy and met the owner Jeremy Libiszewski. Jeremy asked Abi if he would consider competing for him as a member of the FAA. Abi was a quick learner and became an undefeated Mixed Martial Artist. He also became a trainer at the club. Abi loved Jeremy and the rest of his extended family at FAA. Abi was a kind gentle soul. He had only love in his heart for every human being he has ever met. His smile and laugh were a gift straight from god. He was always happy and optimistic no matter what the situation. Abi was very modest and would never speak of his accomplishments. His greatest joy was helping others achieve their goals. Abi loved spending time with his family and friends. He leaves his Mom and Dad, Eva and Ismael. His sister Monica, as well as many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. He will be remembered with love by his teammates at Ludlow, AIC and the Fighting Arts Academy. Visiting hours for Abi will be held on Friday, April 15, 2011 from 5-10pm at Ludlow Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011. Friends and Family may gather at Ludlow Funeral Home beginning at 9:00am with a chapel service to be held at 10:00am followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery.
