Obituary for Ana (Alves) Goncalves

Ana Goncalves, 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday March 8, 2023. Ana will be forever remembered for her enormous heart and contagious smile. Born in Travassos da Cha, Montalegre, Portugal in 1931, she was the daughter of the late Domingos Afonso Alves and Ermelinda Pereira. She met and married the love of her life, Joao Goncalves. Together with their children Maria (Quinhas) and Custodio (Chris), they emigrated to the US in 1966. Two years after arriving in the US, their son Antonio (Tony) was born. Joao and Ana celebrated over 60 years of marriage together. In the United States, Ana worked as a machine operator for many years at Alamac/Ala-Vel Industries. Ana cared for her mother-in-law and father-in-law in her home for many years, and also hosted family in her home when they first arrived from Portugal. Family was of top importance in Ana’s life. She loved to have the family in her home for holidays and birthdays, and was known for her amazing Portuguese cuisine. No one would ever leave her home hungry. Ana’s daughter-in-laws were regarded as her “daughters” and son-in-law was considered her “son.” Ana became a US Citizen. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Ludlow. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, knitting and crocheting. She took great pride in her home at 70 Oak Street in Ludlow and could be seen outside most days puttering around with the garden hose watering and cleaning, with a big smile on her face. She loved flowers and they could be seen displayed in each window of the family home’s wrap-around porch. Ana had a lovely singing voice and singing ‘Happy Birthday” to family members will never be the same without her. Ana especially loved gathering family for the annual Ludlow Memorial Day parade, which would process right by the house. Family would come for breakfast in the early morning and leave late in the evening. Ana was also instrumental in helping to raise her grandchildren while her children worked. When it came to the grandchildren, the word “no” was not in her vocabulary. Ana lived for her husband, the late Joao Goncalves, who predeceased her in 2017. Ana had the joy and privilege of spending her last few years visiting her daughter and “son” in Portugal, who cared for her like royalty. Above all else, Ana was happy each and every day she was able to share with her family, particularly her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Ana was predeceased by her brother Antonio Alves and wife Joaquina of Ludlow and brother Joaquim Alves and wife Judite of Portugal, as well as a sister Maria Alves and husband Manuel of Portugal. She is survived by her children Maria Torres and her husband Manuel of Portugal, Chris Goncalves and his wife Cristina, Tony Goncalves and his wife Heather both of Ludlow. She will be forever missed by her cherished grandchildren Daniel Torres (Ligia), Ana Alexandrina Torres (Nuno), and Cassie, Ryan, Kyle, Liz and AJ Goncalves. The optimal joy in her life most recently was being able to spend time with her great granddaughters Leonor Torres Mouro-Pinto and Lara Barbosa Torres. She also leaves several nieces, nephews and other extended family members. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, March 21 at 9:00am from the Ludlow Funeral Home, 432 East Street, with liturgy of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Fatima Church at 10:00am and burial at St. Aloysius Cemetery. Calling hours on Monday March 20th from 5-7pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ana’s name can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
