Obituary for Anna Silva Amaral
Anna Silva Amaral left this world peacefully on May 30, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. She was the ninth of ten children born to Josefa and Justiniano Silva, who raised their family in Ludlow, Massachusetts. Anna was an excellent student athlete at Ludlow High School where she was an honors student and was selected to the All Western Mass Girls’ Basketball team in 1948 before graduating in 1949. After graduation she began working for AT&T, staying with the company for several years. She met her future husband Gil M. Amaral in 1957. The couple married in 1959 and had two children, Gil and AnaMaria. Anna began her teaching career as a teaching assistant in the Springfield school system in the 1970s. In addition to taking care of family and work she began taking classes in education at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1982. She continued to teach elementary-aged children for over 20 years before retiring. Anna was a longtime officer of the Ludlow Portuguese American Citizens Club as well as the Massachusetts Citizens for Life and the Daughters of Isabella. She taught CCD at Our Lady of Fatima Church where she was a parishioner. Anna was also a longtime parishioner at St. Elizabeth’s Church. She is survived by Gil, her loving husband of sixty-two years; her son Gil Amaral of Towson, Maryland; her daughter AnaMaria Whittier and son-in-law James Whittier of Sunapee, New Hampshire; and five grandchildren: Adam, Emily, Neil, Gregory, and Luke. We all love you VóVó and we miss you. Funeral services for Anna will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at the Ludlow Funeral Home. Visiting hours are Thursday morning from 9:00 to 10:15 AM, with a Liturgy of Christian Mass celebrated at 11:00 AM at St. Elizabeth’s Church followed by burial in St. Aloysius Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Anna’s name to: St. John the Baptist School, 27 Hubbard Street, Ludlow, MA 01056.
