Obituary for Antonia "Toni" (Luiz) Carvalho

Antonia “Toni” (Luiz) Carvalho, 85, of Ludlow passed away unexpectedly in her home on June 27, 2024. Born in Bombarral, Portugal she was the daughter of the late Joaquim and Maria Luciana Luiz. Antonia immigrated to the United States in 1945 where she attended Ludlow schools and became a graduate of Ludlow High School in 1958. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 48 years, Jose, in 2010. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She leaves behind her children and their families: daughter Elizabeth, her husband Antonio and their children, Zachary and Abigail; son Joel and his partner, Joseph Pandolfio. She also leaves behind her brother Jack Luiz and his wife Phyllis, along with several nieces and nephews: Mark Gomes, Gina Fernandes, Jenna Ziskin, and Christopher Luiz, along with many other family members and close friends. In January of this year, Antonia was deeply saddened by the loss of her twin sister Elvira “Vera” Gomes. Antonia and Jose owned and built, through strong dedication, long hours, and very hard work, a successful road construction business based in Ludlow.

A long-time resident of Ludlow, she enjoyed the town’s conveniences and was amazed at how much development had occurred in town over the years. She will be remembered for her kind heart, her strong love for her family, and her enjoyment in talking about her life and past experiences. She often laughingly reminded us of the year her elementary school report card stated “Antonia is too talkative.” She took special joy in watching Zachary and Abigail grow up and become wonderful young adults and recent college graduates. She delighted in some of life’s simplest pleasures, such as dancing at her daughter’s 60th birthday party, dining at great restaurants, and enjoying some silliness at family gatherings. She enjoyed her extra-hot Starbucks lattes with her daughter and granddaughter, leisurely car rides and routine errands with her son, and conversations about her ancestry with her son’s partner. She was an avid collector of cookbooks, cooking magazines, and recipes and liked to spend time watching cooking programs. There was always a word search book on the kitchen table, as she found

some time in each day to complete them. She found it comforting to be able to spend her later years in the home that she so loved for over 40 years where she built lasting friendships with her neighbors and enjoyed their company. As her family sadly shared news of her passing, they constantly heard “She was the nicest lady.” It brings us great comfort knowing that is how she will always be remembered. The family is honoring Antonia’s wishes and all services are private. Antonia was a generous person, and if you wish, please consider a donation to one of Antonia’s favorite charities: Shriners Hospitals for Children, Springfield Rescue Mission, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
