Obituary for Antonio Afonso Alves
Antonio Afonso Alves, 79, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 25th, 2008, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Travassos da Cha,Portugal to the late Domingos Afonso Alves and Ermelinda (Pereira) Alves, he has lived in Ludlow since 1973. Antonio, better known as Russo, was a faithful communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, a proud member of Gremio Lusitano Club and a former soldier in the Portuguese Army. He enjoyed gardening, Bocce, going for walks and spending time with his grandchildren. Antonio worked for many years at the Jahn Foundry Corp. and later at Sunshine Art Studios before retiring. He leaves his beloved wife of 51 years, Maria Joaquina (Moura) Alves; loving children Joaquim Alves and his wife Judy, Antonio Alves and his wife Teresa, Jose Alves and Ermelinda Alves Goncalves and her husband Matias, all of Ludlow; cherished grandchildren Melinda Alves, Jacinda Alves, Anthony Alves, Derek Alves, Dominique Alves, Paiton Alves, Alexis Alves, Adam Goncalves, David Goncalves and Mariana Goncalves; his caring sister Ana Goncalves and her husband Joao of Ludlow; a brother Joaquim Afonso Alves in Portugal; as well as several nieces, nephews and many friends. Antonio was predeceased by his sister Maria Afonso Alves. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Wingate at East Longmeadow.   Funeral services will be held on Saturday morning from the Ludlow Funeral Home at 8am with a Liturgy of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Fatima Church at 9am, followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Friday from 5-8pm.
