Obituary for Antonio Dias
Antonio Dias (92) passed away peacefully on October 26th, 2021 to join his beloved wife, Ana Maria Dias, who predeceased him in 1989. Born on January 17, 1929 in Torgueda da Cha Montalegre, Portugal to Domingos and Herminia Dias. Antonio immigrated to Ludlow, MA in 1967 where he worked at Alamac. He served in the Portuguese Army, was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church and member of the Gremio Lusitano Club. Antonio was a quiet and thoughtful man. He was an avid gardener – in fact he would sneak into his kids’ yard and plant a fruit tree without their knowledge. He loved to plant and nurture his vegetables and fruits so that he could share the harvest. He took pride in making wine “back in the day” which he would enjoy while watching his beloved Benfica. Soccer was definitely his religion. He formerly coached various local soccer teams and never missed his sons’ games where later discussions “a/k/a arguments” ensued about missed opportunities. The discussions didn’t stop there, as he was a diehard Bruins and Red Sox fan and his children were decidedly Rangers and Yankees. But nothing, nothing could compare to his love for his family, of which he had plenty, and his favorite dog Lillie “Carrica”. Antonio will be dearly missed by his loving daughters and sons and their spouses: Ines and Jaime Malaquias, Armenio and Senhorinha Dias, John and Theresa Dias, Tony and Despina Dias, Fatima and Domingos Gomes, Elisabete and Celso Correia, Luisa McCarthy and fiancé John Franco. Additionally, he leaves behind his grandchildren and their spouses: Lisa and Ray Colson, Angela and KJ Cardinal, Corey and Anna Malaquias, Lisette Malaquias, Jessica Dias, Eric and Samantha Dias, Brooke Dias, Alexandra and Ian Murphy, Christian Dias, Nicholas Correia, Rachel Correia, Vanessa and Kyle O’Connor, Brandon McCarthy, Meagan McCarthy and partner Jay Weigel. Antonio also leaves behind a slew of great grandchildren: Samantha and Zach Aglietti, Jayden, Kassie, and Emery Malaquias, Ryan and Julia Colson, Anna and Leo Cardinal, Arya and Milo Dias, Roman O’Connor and Maximus Lima. He is survived by his loving sister Palmira Goncalves and several nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends here in the states as well as in Portugal. Antonio is predeceased by his grandson Michael Malaquias, his sisters Luisa Almeida and Ana Barroso. And, let us not forget his loving pups Ozzie and Lillie. Calling hours will be Wednesday, November 3rd from 8:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. at the Ludlow Funeral Home located at 432 East St. Ludlow, Massachusetts. The family recommends that visitors wear masks. Family and friends may join a church service at Our Lady of Fatima Church at 11:00 a.m. followed by burial at St. Aloysius Cemetery. Donations may be made in Antonio’s memory to Our Lady of Fatima, Gremio Lusitano or MADD
