Obituary for Antonio Fernandes
Antonio Fernandes, 98, of Ludlow passed away peacefully on Friday March 1, 2019 at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home. Antonio was born in Ludlow to the late Alvaro and Gertrudes (Freitas) Fernandes. At the age of 21 he enlisted and proudly served in the United States Army from 1941-1945 in the European Theater of Operations in WWII. He received the distinguished Bronze Star for his actions in late 1944-1945. Upon returning to the United States, he reunited with his love Rose Queiros in Ludlow and they married in December 1945. He enjoyed hunting, travel and gardening. Antonio leaves his beloved wife Rose, his loving children Carol Fernandes Crespo and her husband Pedro and Dennis Fernandes and his wife Arminda; adored grandsons Alexander and Michael Crespo; caring sister Linda Joao and his brothers Jose, Amandio and Joao Fernandes. Sadly Antonio was predeceased by his sister Anna Roxo and his brother Bento Fernandes. Funeral services with Military Honors will be held on Friday, March 8th, 2019 from the Ludlow Funeral Home. Visiting hours are Friday morning from 8:30-10: 15am with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in St. Aloysius Cemetery. It was the request of Antonio's family that in lieu of flowers please make donations in his memory to; Veterans’ Services, Ludlow Town Hall, 488 Chapin St. Ludlow, Ma. 01056.
