Obituary for Antonio Fontoura
Antonio Bernardes Fontoura, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully at the age of 84 while surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, May 19th, 2019. He was born on April 14th, 1935 in Vilar de Perdizes, Portugal, to the late Silvestre and Ana Fontoura. Antonio spent time studying in Chaves before moving to São Paulo, Brazil in 1960, where he ran his own small business. Immigrating to the United States in 1967, Antonio settled in Ludlow where he displayed his strong work ethic through working overnights at Uniroyal Tires of Chicopee for 10 years, and later working at Friendly’s Corporation in Wilbraham for 15 years.In his spare time, he enjoyed playing cards at the Gremio Lusitano Club of Ludlow, of which he was a member and served as treasurer in the early 1970’s. He also enjoyed playing bocce ball, watching his favorite soccer team, Benfica, spending summers in Portugal with his wife, and dining out at his favorite restaurants, Friendly’s and Tony and Penny’s. Above all, however, his greatest joy in life was spending time with his beloved family. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 58 years, Maria (Goncalves) Fontoura, as well as their loving children and spouses; Carlos Fontoura and partner Linda Colon, Gerson Fontoura and wife Darlene,and Lucia (Fontoura) da Cruz and husband Tony. Antonio also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren Jennifer, Jacinda, Christian, and Kyle. He was a dear brother to Ilidio Fontoura and wife Rosa, Adelia Dias and late husband Domingos, and Manuel Fontoura;loving brother-in-law to Lucia Fernandes and late husband Manuel; and is predeceased by his sisters Aurora Azevido and husband João, as well as Angela Maria Fontoura. He also leaves behind many beloved nephews, nieces, cousins and friends; across the United States, Brazil, and Portugal. Antonio’s family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Alfred Piel at Trinity Health and Dr. William Harbison at Baystate Pioneer Valley Cardiology for the exceptional care they provided him. He appreciated them both immensely.They also wish to thank all the doctors and nurses from Baystate Medical Center that helped in his care, particularly his visiting nurse Marianne Wales. Funeral services will be private in accordance with Antonio’s wishes and services were entrusted to Ludlow Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association.
