Obituary for Antonio Goncalves
Antonio Goncalves passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loving family on Monday November 29th, 2021. Born in Sabuzedo, Portugal, son of the late Bento and Ana Goncalves, he immigrated to Brazil in the 1960s where he met and married his wife, Candida. He and his family then immigrated to the United States in the early 70s and settled in Ludlow where he was a long-standing member of the Gremio Lusitano Club and the Polish American Citizens Club where he really enjoyed dancing the polkas in the 70s and 80s. Antonio always felt blessed with the opportunity to immigrate to the United States and carry out his American dream and was always proud of becoming a naturalized citizen in the 90s. He did this through constant hard work – at times holding two jobs to provide for his family. Antonio was hard working, honest and always willing to help. Whatever he set his mind out to do, he would accomplish. He loved his family, tending to his garden and taking care of his rabbits. Antonio will forever be in our hearts.
Antonio leaves his loving wife, Candida Goncalves; his devoted daughter, Ana Serrazina and her husband Rui Serrazina and their children Erica and Vincent; his son Jose Goncalves and his partner Jill Pereira and her son Andrew; Jose Goncalves' daughters Ashley and her children Ava and Toby, and Sadie and Nora and their mother Corinne Goncalves. He also leaves behind his brother Jose Goncalves of Ludlow and his wife Antonia, sister Maria Machado and her husband Arnaldo of Portugal, sister-in-law Mercedes Goncalves of Ludlow, as well as many nieces and nephews. Sadly, he was predeceased by his brothers Domingos, Fernando, Delfin, Bento and his sister Laurinda Martins.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the 6th floor of Daly and 5th floor Southwest buildings of Baystate Medical Center for their exceptional care and kindness.
Funeral services for Antonio will be held on Friday, December 3rd. Visiting hours are from 8:00-9:15am in Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Antonio’s memory to Our Lady of Fatima Shrine and if so moved, please offer a prayer for eternal rest for his soul.
