Obituary for Antonio Goncalves
Antonio Goncalves, 65, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2025 with his loving family by his side. Born in New Bedford, MA, he was the beloved son of Custodio and Joaquina (Dias) Goncalves. Tony was a graduate of Ludlow High School and STCC and in 1989, he co founded Ideal Insurance Agency with Joe Chaves later expanding to Ideal Real Estate with partners, Joe, Suzie Ice, and John Bettencourt. Together, the agency developed Ideal Lane and Pondview Manor alongside David and Lena Lavoie. Tony was an active community leader, mentor, and business icon in Ludlow and within the Portuguese community and his love for Ludlow showed through his various town roles and the displaying of “Ludlow” on his vehicle’s licence plate. He was currently serving on the Ludlow Board of Selectmen and formerly served on the town’s planning board; was a member of the Gremio Lusitano Club, the Ludlow CARES Coalition, and the Night in Portugal Scholarship Committee.
Tony had passion for golf and was a member of the Ludlow Country Club for over 25 years. He was also actively involved with the St. John the Baptist School Golf Tournament to benefit the school where his twins attended, the Luso Open Golf Scholarship Tournament to benefit (LACA) serving since 1990, and always looked forward to the annual Myrtle Beach golf trips with his friends.
He loved the NE Patriots and the historical highlight of his sports experience was attending Super Bowl LI with Joe in Houston TX and watching them overcome the largest deficit in Super Bowl history leading them to an OT victory over the Falcons.
Tony will be remembered as an amazing family man and will be deeply missed by his parents; his loving wife Rosa (Dias) Goncalves; his beloved children Jessica Goncalves and husband Austin Rattet, Christina Brach and husband John, Antonio Goncalves and wife Nia Maya James, and twin sons Jonathan and Christopher Goncalves; his cherished grandchildren Olivia, Camryn, Antonio III, and Quincy, as well as many loving extended family members and dear friends.
Visiting hours for Tony will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2025 from 4:00-7:00pm at Ludlow Funeral Home. Funeral services are on Friday April 11th. Family and Friends are asked to gather directly at Our Lady of Fatima Parish for a Liturgy of Christian Burial beginning at 11:00am followed by burial in Reservoir Cemetery in Ludlow. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Tony’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org)
