Antonio “Tony” Gomes, 79, of Ludlow, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Faia, Portugal, Tony later settled in Ludlow, where he built a life rooted in family, hard work, and community. He most recently worked as a Lenox machine operator for American Saw Manufacturing until his retirement in 2001 and, before that, as a tire splicer at Uniroyal until its closing. Known for his strong work ethic, Tony was equally admired for his warmth and dedication to those around him. Tony had a passion for gardening and was well known by neighbors for maintaining the most beautiful landscaping on his street. He was also an avid car enthusiast who took great pride in keeping his vehicles—and his daughter’s—immaculate. Summers spent in Ogunquit, Maine with family brought him joy, as did more recent afternoons spent on the golf course with his beloved grandson, Jackson, whom he affectionately called his “star.” Tony also had a special bond with his grand-dog, Leo, his daughter’s Shih Tzu, who brought him frequent companionship and great happiness. Tony was known for his intense devotion to his family but also for providing comic relief in many situations—often unintentionally—bringing joy and laughter to all those around him. Tony was a proud member of the Gremio Lusitano Club, where he represented the Bocci Team for many years, and he was also a faithful parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 57 years, Maria (Fernandes) Gomes; his cherished daughter, Jennifer Calheno, and her husband, Augie Calheno Jr.; and his treasured grandson, Jackson. He is also survived by his brother, Jose Gomes, and his wife, Maria; his sisters, Maria Marta and her husband, Fausto, and Elena Ganhao and her husband, Jorge; his goddaughter, Cristina Saraiva and her husband Armand; nephews, Paulo Marta and his wife Lori and Scott Gomes-Ganhao and his wife Stephanie; his aunt, Maria Marques and her late husband Jose; his uncle, Jose Pires and his late wife Carma; many cousins; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom will miss him dearly. Tony was predeceased by his parents, Joaquim and Maria Gomes as well as his aunt Paixao Monteiro and her husband Antonio. A Funeral Mass for Tony will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church. Burial services will be private at the request of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tony’s memory to the D’Amour Center for Cancer or the Dana-Farber Institute @ www.dana-farber.org. Tony will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His love, kindness, and gentle spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
