Obituary for Armando daSilva
Armando da Silva, 89, of Southwick passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 27th, 2011. Born in Cumberland, Rhode Island to the late Manuel and Casilda (Neves) da Silva, he was raised and educated in Portugal and lived most of his adult life in Ludlow. He traveled throughout South America while working for the US Embassy in Rio de Janeiro. Armando served his country honorably in the United States Army during WWII in the First Infantry Division (The Big Red One). Armando was proud to serve his country and was especially honored to serve as a Guard at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials in Germany. He was a dedicated Monsanto employee　for over 40 years. After his retirement, he resided in Florida before moving to Southwick 7 years ago. He was an avid bicyclist and he rode his bike in good weather until his death.　He took great pride in recounting his cycling stories especially the round trip cycling adventure with his college buddies from Portugal over the Pyrenees to Paris, France.　Armando was a proud member of the Gremio Lusitano Club, longtime volunteer at the Southwick Senior Center and belonged to the Monsanto 25 Year Club.　He leaves his loving wife of 64 years Lucille (Costa); his loving daughter Marlene Quinlan and her husband James Johnson of Southwick; cherished grandchildren, Amanda Quinlan Manale and her husband Scott, Kyle Quinlan, Andrea Johnson Redenz and her husband Carsten of Germany, Megan Johnson, Erik Johnson and his wife Catherine; caring sisters and brother - Isabel Correia and husband Antonio, Candida Albuquerque and husband Alfredo; and Ernesto Silva Neves and his wife Rosa. He was blessed to have four great-grandchildren: John and Noah Manale; and Joshua and Michelle Redenz with whom he loved being playful.　 He also loved the company of　his many extended family members and friends who have graced his life and always held a special place in his heart, including Freya his four-legged friend.　 Armando’s family extend their heartfelt thanks to the Samaritans, Granville and State Police, and the ER Personnel at Baystate Medical Center for their extraordinary efforts to help him. Funeral services with Military Honors will be held on Thursday, February 3rd, 2011 at 8:30 AM from the Ludlow Funeral Home, 432 East Street, Ludlow followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated in Our Lady of Fatima Church at 9:30 AM with burial to follow in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.　 Visiting hours are Wednesday evening from 4:00-7:00 PM and in lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made in Armando's memory to:　 Farmington Valley Trails Council, P.O.
