Obituary for August "Gus" Ferreira
August “Gus” Ferreira, 87, of West Springfield, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 19, 2010. Born in Gardner, he lived most of his life in Ludlow and as a young man played soccer for the Lusitano Club. Gus was a United States Army Veteran proudly serving his country during WWII. After the war, he worked for the former Westinghouse Corp. in Springfield, as a civilian at Westover AFB and later at Agway in Westfield from which he retired. He also had a passion for hockey and gardening. Gus was the beloved husband of the late Mary (Dascanio) Ferreira who predeceased him in 2001; the loving father of Frank Ferreira and his wife Patricia, of Chicopee, Daniel Ferreira, of West Springfield, and Patricia Shauer and her husband Marvin of Bloomfield, CO; a dear brother to Philomena Pereira, of Ludlow; a cherished grandfather to Sharon Wilson and husband Alan, Kelly Lynch, Tina Matheney and husband Matt, Dayna Nethercott and husband Kevin, and Toni Ferreira; great-grandfather of 5; great-great grandfather of 2; and also leaves several nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at Ludlow Funeral Home at 12:00pm with Monsignor Homer Gosselin officiating followed by burial in St. Aloysius Cemetery. Visiting hours will precede the chapel service from 10-11:45am.
