Obituary for Benta Marques
Benta Marques, 94, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2025, surrounded by the love and comfort of her devoted family. Born in Penalonga, Portugal, to the late Bento and Maria Marques, Benta immigrated to the United States in 1972 and settled in Ludlow. She was a faithful communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Parish and lived a life guided by profound faith.
Benta had a deep love for gardening and spent countless hours tending to her plants, finding peace and joy in nurturing nature. Her garden was a place of beauty and serenity, reflecting her gentle spirit and care for life. She will be remembered for her kind and gentle soul. Benta loved her family dearly and never missed an opportunity to tell them how much she loved them—there was never a goodbye without saying ‘I love you.’
Throughout her life, Benta cared for hundreds of children in Ludlow, many of whom affectionately called her ‘Vo Benta.’ Her devotion to family and community touched countless lives.
Benta was predeceased by her husband, Mario, in 1988; her son, Jose Maria; her brother, Jose Marques; and her brother-in-law, Amandio.
She leaves behind her beloved family, who will carry her memory with love and gratitude. Her son Domingos Marques and his wife Maria Nelia; her daughters Judith Da Silva and her husband Horacio, all of Ludlow, and Rose of Texas. Her dear grandchildren Christine and her husband Justin, Daniel, Jason, and Steven and his wife Kelly, all of Ludlow. Her cherished great-grandchildren Avery, Camden, and soon-to-arrive Dakota. She is also survived by her sisters Rosa Carvalheiro and Alexandrina Marcelino and her husband Fernando, and her sister-in-law Benvinda Marques, along with many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2025. Visiting hours are from 9:00-10:15AM at Ludlow Funeral Home. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Parish, followed by burial at St. Aloysius Cemetery, Berkshire Avenue, Springfield, MA.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Benta’s memory to Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Ludlow, MA.
