Obituary for Bento Mendes Goncalves
Bento Mendes Goncalves, 83, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2022. Born in Penedones, Portugal, son of the late Pedro Goncalves and Ana Maria Mendes Marques, he immigrated to the United States along with his wife and son, settling in Ludlow, MA. Bento enjoyed taking long walks in nice weather, being a handy-man around the house in which he never encountered a problem he couldn’t solve in his own unique way. Over the years, he also enjoyed making his own wine and gardening. Above all else, he was very dedicated to nurturing and providing for his family. Bento was the beloved husband for 61 years to the late Maria Goncalves; a loving father to Tony M. Goncalves and wife Henrietta, and Maria Maggi and husband John; a devoted grandfather to Hailee Lester and husband Ryan, Kyle Goncalves and wife Kelsey, Melissa Nix and husband Jeremy, Nathan Hague, and Madalyn Hague; great-grandfather to Cecelia Lester; a dear brother to João Goncalves, the late Ana Goncalves and Joaquina Goncalves; and also leaves many loving extended family members and dear friends. Funeral services celebrating Bento’s life will be held on Tuesday October 4, 2022 at 9:00am from the Ludlow Funeral Home with a Liturgy of Christian Mass at 10:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church, followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours are Monday evening from 5:00-7:00pm at the funeral home and in lieu of flowers it was the wish of Bento’s family that donations be made in his memory to: Alzheimer's Association at Alz.org.
