Carlos “Charlie” Santos, Sr., 101, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully at home on April 15, 2020. Born in Ludlow, son of the late Anibel and Anna (De Fonseca) Santos, he was a lifelong resident where he was affectionately known to all as “Charlie”. Charlie was a United States Army Veteran honorably serving his country during WWII from 1942-1945, and on April 1, 1944, he was awarded the Purple Heart when injured in Monte Casino, Italy. He worked for Daylight Dairy and then as a Crane operator for Jahn Foundry for many years and was an avid sports fan, especially of all Boston teams. Soccer was his first love; he played varsity soccer in HS, cheered for Benfica, and was a founding member of Lusitano Alumni and Fans. Charlie was always active in his community. He was a member of Ludlow Lions Club for 68 years where he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest form of recognition to acknowledge an individual’s dedication to humanitarian service by the Ludlow Lions Club, a member of the Gremio Lusitano Club, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In May 2018, he received an honorary high school diploma from LHS and in November 2018, was honored as Ludlow Veteran of the Year. In 1948, Charlie married Laura (Bernardo) Santos, whom he remained happily married to until her passing in 1986. He leaves behind three children, Carlos Santos Jr. and husband Isaac, Trudy Santos Line, and Scott Santos and wife Patty; seven grandchildren Gregory Santos, Nicholas Line and wife Linda, Kerri Kinne and husband Daniel, Breanna Line and fiancé Rachel Guerin, Scott, Madelyne, and Carlos Santos, along with four great-grandchildren Nathan, Noah, Eleanor, and Malcolm. Charlie was one of nine siblings: Sid Tarbox, Mickey Silva, Lena Oliveira, and the late Morris, Simon, Terry Harasik, Julia Gajewski, and Hilda Belisle; and also leaves behind many loved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
