Obituary for Catherine Helen (Thomas) Gauthier
Catherine Helen Thomas Gauthier died on March 5, 2021. She was the widow of Eugene H. Gauthier who died in 1991. She was predeceased by her sister, Lorraine Loomer; brothers-in-law Leslie Corey, Edward Loomer and Frank Norton.
Catherine was born in Springfield on March 10, 1927, the second daughter of seven children to the late Said and Catherine Thomas. She lived in West Springfield, Agawam, and Ludlow since 1955.
She graduated from West Springfield High School in 1944, where she was a member of the Pro Merito Honor Society. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from American International College in 1948 and a Masters Degree in Education from Springfield College in 1951. Catherine also took many advanced courses at Westfield State College.
She retired from the Ludlow Public Schools in June 1991. She was in education forty-three years – seven years in Enfield, CT, as a teacher; six years in Ludlow as a teacher, and thirty-four years as a principal in Ludlow. She was the first principal of the Veterans Park School and retired from there in June 1991.
Catherine had been a member of the Massachusetts Elementary Principal Association, a life member of the National Education Association and the Massachusetts Teachers Association. Also, she had been a member of the Hampden County Teachers Association, the Ludlow Education Association, and a member of Sigma Lambda Kappa sorority at A.I.C.
She enjoyed the many gatherings with her extended family. She looked forward to her casino trips with her sisters and brother-in-law, Neil Hall. During her retirement, she was a member of the Marie Stevens West Side Tappers and the West Side Classic Red Hatters.
Catherine enjoyed many gatherings with her extended family. She especially enjoyed the birthday parties for the many nieces and nephews, great, and great, great nieces and nephews.
Catherine is survived by her sisters – Jeanette Corey, Mary Rita Thomas, Rosanna Hall (Neil), Theresa Norton, and her brother Richard Thomas. She is also survived by her brothers-in-law and sister-in-law – Kenneth and Annette Gauthier; Singer Island; FL; Richard Coache Ludlow; Nieces Catherine Adams (Thomas), Diane Tillman, Donna Adams (Joseph), Susan Norton, and nephew, Michael Loomer.
Special recognition for the compassionate care and nursing expertise delivered by the O’Connell Care at Home staff, The Holyoke Visiting Nurses and Hospice Life Care
The private funeral will be held at the Ludlow Funeral Home.
Donations in Catherine’s memory may be made to the Holyoke VNA and Hospice Life Care at 575 Beech St., Holyoke, Ma, 01040 or to the St. Elizabeth Parish at St. John the Baptist Church, 181 Hubbard Street.
