Obituary for Charles "Chuck" Lopes
Charles Lopes, 91, of Ludlow passed away peacefully on March 23, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 1, 1927, he was the son of the late Eduardo and Adelaide(Goncalves) Lopes and was a longtime resident of Ludlow. Chuck was a veteran, proudly serving his country during World War II. He worked as an aircraft mechanic at Hamilton Standard from where he retired after 28 years.
Chuck married the love of his life, Alzira (Henriques) Lopes, to whom he was married for over 65 years. He was a loving brother to Ida Ribas and Alfred Lopes, now deceased. Chuck will be sadly missed by his many loving extended family members and dear friends, including sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, too many to list, all whom he had great affection for.
Chuck was a 30-year member of the Chicopee Lodge of Elks 1849, where, on so many occasions, he danced the night away with his beloved Alzira. He also was a sports enthusiast, cheering for his favorite teams, the Patriots, Red Sox, and Boston Bruins. He also was an avid bowler.
Chuck's favorite winter pastime was building birdhouses, which he shared with many of his friends and neighbors, and enjoyed watching the various birds that took up residence in his backyard.
Chuck took great pleasure in gardening. His favorite flower was the hibiscus. Chuck grew the most beautiful, abundant hibiscus, showcased in plantings surrounding his home which became the attraction of the neighborhood. Chuck shared seedlings and seeds he harvested from his hibiscus with many of his friends so that they themselves could enjoy such magnificent flowers. For those fortunate enough to have received these special gifts from Chuck, may his illustrious hibiscus thrive forever in their gardens in his memory.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 28 from 8:30-10:00 a.m. at the Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian burial at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Elizabeth Parish followed by burial with Military Honors at St. Aloysius Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Chuck's memory to Baystate Hospice, 50 Maple Street, Springfield, MA 01103
