Charles Quinby, Chuck to some and Chas to others, 70, passed away peacefully in Suffield, Connecticut on Wednesday morning, September 27, 2023, following a multi-year struggle with dementia. Born in Ludlow to the late Charles Quinby and Theresa (Belisle) Quinby St. Onge, Chuck graduated from Cathedral High School in the class of 1971 and went on to graduate from St. Anselm’s in 1975. At St. A’s, Chuck kindled a life-long love of chemistry, which he would go on to study at UMASS Lowell, focusing on gas chromotographic techniques of differential column packing and long chain aliphatic amines.
Chuck’s professional life had many acts: IHOP manager, analytical chemist, environmental, health & safety supervisor, business development manager, B&B proprietor, and retiree. Throughout, Chuck was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was also a lifelong learner, who enjoyed gifting a good book, and taught various courses, frequently statistics, at Springfield Technical Community College. Chuck instilled his love of education in his children, relishing the opportunity to jointly tackle a science fair project.
Chuck had a discerning nose for big, high-altitude California cabs and loved to share treasured bottles with friends and family. He could frequently be found, cigar and cocktail in hand, taking in the view from his dock on Leadmine Pond or from his lanai above Cocoa Beach with the love of his life, his late wife Chrys. Chuck was a fierce competitor and – whether playing backgammon with his grandchildren, Risk with his children, or engaging in friendly debate – he took no prisoners.
Chuck is predeceased by his father, mother, step-father Al St. Onge, sister Charlene, and wife, Chryseia Brennan. He is survived by his seven loving children and step-children and their spouses, Chris and Sharise of Castro Valley, CA; Peter and Becca of Windsor, CT; Tina of Baltimore, MD; Matt and Liz of Feeding Hills, MA; Nick and Jill of Boston, MA; Neil Holloway and Bich Nguyen of Gainesville, FL; Cole and Meghan Holloway of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; and step-siblings, Michael, Marion, David, and Brian. Chuck was a beloved Pop-pop to nine grandchildren, Abigail, Nathan, Caleb, Sierra, Cayden, Megan, Jacob, Michael, and Annabelle.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Visiting Angels Southbridge, Suffield by the River, Priority Care, and Trinity Hospice.
