Obituary for Charles H. Haney
Charles Haney, 77, formerly of Chicopee and Ludlow, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Newport, VT, son of the late George Haney and Viola (Flanders) Haney, he lived in Ludlow for 24 years before moving to Chicopee in 1991.  Charles served in the U.S. Army from 1952 – 1955 and graduated from Springfield College in 1960. He worked as a Physical Education teacher for 32 years in the City of Chicopee, retiring in 1993. He was an avid Red Sox fan and loved supporting his children and grandchildren in various sporting events. An athlete himself, Charles was the New England Wrestling Champion in 1959, competing as a junior in the 167 lb. weight class for Springfield College. He was a dedicated runner and completed his first marathon in 1982 at the age of 49. Charles was a member of the Fairview American Legion Post 438 for 36 years and spent many years raising money for The Easter Seal Society.  Charles was the beloved husband of 48 years to the late Marie (Warriner) Haney; the loving father to Theresa Gozdur and her husband William of Lakeland FL, Steven Haney and his wife Joan of Ludlow, Mark Haney and his wife Sharon of Chicopee, Kathy Mangini and her husband Mark of Somers CT, Kenneth Haney Sr. and his wife Kathy of Chicopee, and Laura Haney of Lee; a dear brother to Sandra Dunn and her husband Pat of Lowell, VT, Norma Lyon and her husband Howard of Binghamton, NY, Gloria Haney of Newport, VT, the late Marilyn Smith and her husband Rodney of Craftsbury, VT, and the late Cyril Haney of Newport, VT; a dear brother-in-law to Eunice Warriner, of Springfield; cherished grandfather to 16, and great-grandfather to 8.  Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 15, at 11 AM at Ludlow Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Island Pond Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday evening from 4-7 PM.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriners Hospital, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104 or the Massachusetts Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
