Charles Robert Capers died peacefully on October 5, 2024 at the Elaine Center in Hadley, MA. Charles was born in Mexia, Texas on August 13, 1932. After finishing medical school in Galveston, he moved to Western Massachusetts with his wife Beverly and children for a prestigious fellowship at the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge MA. Charles started his private psychiatry practice in the 1970s and became the director of adult psychiatric services for Berkshire Medical Center for several years. He retired from private practice in 1990 and dedicated his skills to work with teenagers and local schools. Charles loved to fix everything, listening to music, telling stories about growing up on a pecan farm in Texas, and his five “Capers Girls.” In the warm weather he could be found scuba diving in many places around Massachusetts, and in the cold weather he loved to ski the mountains of New England. The family spent many happy summers on Cape Cod, where Charles and Beverly eventually retired. In the last few years they lived comfortably at Christopher Heights in Belchertown - one of the first residents to move into the beautiful new facility. Charles is survived by his loving wife of 69 years and his five children, MaryAnne Young, Lucy Capers, Julia Frankel, Martha Pavao and Peg Capers. He is also remembered for his love and care by his seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A remembrance service will be held at Christopher Heights in Belchertown MA on December 27th at 2 pm where the staff and residents who loved him will join his grateful family to celebrate his life.
