Obituary for Custodia R. (Fernandes) dos Santos
Custodia R. (Fernandes) dos Santos, 61, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully at home on March 7, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Medeiros, Portugal, daughter of the late Antonio and Joaquina Fernandes, she immigrated to the United States in 1984. Custodia settled in Ludlow where she was a faithful communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church and worked for 21 years at Ludlow Textiles. She later worked for 10 years at Edaron in Holyoke and in her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking portuguese food, crocheting, doing crossword puzzles, and reading the bible; but her greatest joy in life was spending time with her beloved 5 grandsons. Custodia was a loving mother to Fernando Jorge dos Santos and wife Monica, of Ludlow, Diane dos Santos, also of Ludlow, and Nancy R. dos Santos and partner Ben Quesnel, of Somerville; a cherished Avo to Diogo M., Marco S., and Leonardo J. dos Santos, and Gabriel A. and Jacob B. Bernatchez; a dear sister to Amelia Atilho and husband Anibal, of France, Gloria Afonso, of Portugal, and the late Ana and Rosa Fernandes, and Maria DaCruz and widower Joaquim. She also leaves her former husband Fernando D. dos Santos, as well as many loving extended family members and dear friends both here and in Portugal. Custodia’s family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Amanda Vest and her staff at Tufts Medical Center and Baystate VNA and Hospice, especially Rebecca and Kate, for the exceptional care and compassion they provided to her. Funeral services for Custodia will be held on Tuesday, March 12th at 10:00am from Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by entombment in The Most Holy Redeemer Mausoleum at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Visiting hours are on Monday from 5:00- 7:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Heart Association (heart.org).
