Obituary for Daniel A. Downing Jr.
Daniel A. Downing Jr., Air Force Veteran, 73, of Ludlow, was called Peacefully Home on January 6, 2010. He was born in Tarrytown, NY, to the late Daniel & Edith (Stein) Downing and graduated Cum Laude from Dowling College, NY. After the Air Force he worked for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an air traffic control specialist working in many airports around New England and New York until he became the Regional Manager for the New England Region covering all airports from Southern New Hampshire, Massachusetts & Connecticut. Upon his retirement, he began a new career- joining the Ludlow Police Department as a Dispatcher & 911 Call taker for nine years, retiring in 2005. Golf was his lifelong passion beginning as a youth and finishing with his last round in September when his score was 76. He participated in the Massachusetts Senior Olympic Games for golf winning 5 gold medals and one silver. He was a lifelong member and past president of Ludlow Country Club, recently enjoying the last few years golfing at Westover Golf Course where he had many an enjoyable round with friends. Daniel was the beloved husband of 30 years to Kim (McClannahan) Downing; a loving father to Stacey M. Downing, of East Winsor, CT, and Diane Downing Peterson, of NY; a dear brother to John “Jack” Downing, of NY, Kathy Yasinsac, also of NY, and Marguerite Botto, of NJ; a cherished grandfather to Ryan Peterson; and also leaves many other extended family members and dear friends. Family and friends are asked to attend visiting hours for Daniel on Sunday Jan. 10, 2010 from 1:00-3:45pm concluding with a Celebration of Life Service at 4:00pm. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in New York.
