Obituary for Deacon Robert L. Duval, Sr.
Deacon Robert L. Duval, Sr., affectionately known as Bob, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2020, at the age of 91. Born in Phoenix, AZ, Bob was a United States Army Veteran proudly serving his country during the Korean War and received his Bachelor’s degree from AIC. Bob was a longtime Ludlow resident and worked for several years at Flexon in Spencer, Ma from where he retired. He was a devoted member of the former St. Mary of the Assumption Parish where he served as deacon from his ordination in 1984 until its closing in January of 2010, and upon its closing, he became a member of St. Elizabeth Parish. He took pride in his work within the community while doing ministry work at the Ludlow Correctional Facility as well as with the sick and elderly. Bob’s life journey in Christ had taken him from combat in Korea, to holding the hand of those forgotten as they entered their final journey. He saw himself as just an instrument of Christ’s love. Once, when asked what he found most meaning in, he responded, “just helping the other guy”. Bob was the beloved husband of Gloria M. (Couture) Duval, who predeceased him in 2012. He leaves his loving children Robert Duval Jr. and wife Brenda Darling, Barbara Gilley and husband David, and Michelle Dennis and husband James; cherished grandchildren Derrick Duval and partner Crystal Netherton and David Duval and partner Sandra Dudek, Zacharie Gilley and wife Taylor, Alysha Gilley and fiance Jonathan Chappell, and Nicole Dennis and partner Danny Martins, Nathan Dennis and Rebecca Dennis and partner Joe LaRose; great-grandchildren Lily and Naomi Duval, and Beau Chappell, a brother Donald Duval, as well as many loving extended family members and dear friends including his close friends Don Plante and Ed Jerz. Sadly, Bob was predeceased by his daughter-in-law Catherine Duval and brother Richard Duval. Bob’s family wishes to extend a special Thank You to the Holyoke Soldiers Home and Holyoke Medical Center for their exceptional care and support during this difficult time. A public walk through visitation will be held on Thursday, May 28th from 5:00-7:00pm in Ludlow Funeral Home adhering to State and Local guidelines in regards to no contact, social distancing, and PPE. Family and Friends may gather on Friday, May 29th for a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00am directly in St. Anne Church 30 College St. Chicopee 01020 concluding with Military Honors. Burial in Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob’s memory to Jericho 537 Northampton St. Holyoke, Ma. 01040
