Edith F. (Mansfield) Merkel, 93, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2011, with her loving family by her side. Born in Union, NH, daughter of the late Dr. Burleigh Burton Mansfield and Florence (Rand) Mansfield, she spent her early years in Ipswich, MA, where she was very involved in her Episcopal faith and enjoyed horseback riding and tennis. She later received her Bachelor of Science from Boston University and was employed as a P.E. Teacher before retiring to raise her family. Edith was very active in her community as past president of the PTA and the Present Day Club, the bridge club, the garden club, a member of the Officer's Club and member of the former St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Edith enjoyed keeping an active mind and body. She was an avid reader and sewer, making clothing for her entire family. She also loved swimming, canning vegetables from her garden, doing crossword puzzles and was an avid indoor and outdoor gardener into her 80's. Edith was the beloved wife of the late Gordon O. Merkel, who predeceased her in 1990; a loving mother to Lynda Scheer and husband Robert, of Ludlow, Sandra Miller, of Tolland, CT, Gail Merkel, of Ware, Gordon Merkel and wife Leonore, of NC, and the late Jonathan Merkel; a devoted gram to Deb Scheer-Burnett and husband Daniel, Darren Scheer and wife Amy, Carolyn Scheer and Todd Williams, Jason and Eric Scheer, Kendra Yager, Edward and Matthew McCorkindale, and Laura, Kristin, Melissa, Tara, and Jonathan Charles Merkel; cherished great-gram of Kyra and Brittany Burnett, Zain Chandler, Jalynn and Kaylah Scheer, Chloe Williams, and Angelica Yager; dear sister to the late Ann Mansfield and Hope Jahn; and also leaves many loving extended family members and dear friends including the Livermore family. The family also wishes to express their thanks and gratitude to the Jewish Nursing Home staff; especially of floor C2, for all of their care and support. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept 17th at 12:00 pm in Ludlow Funeral Home followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visitation will precede the funeral from 11-11:45am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Edith's memory to the Jewish Nursing Home and Spectrum Hospice 770 Converse St. Longmeadow, Ma. 01106.
