Obituary for Elizabeth (Griffin) Jurkowski
Elizabeth E. "Betty" Jurkowski, 82, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, February 27, 2012 at Wingate in Springfield. She was born Elizabeth Eileen Griffin on April 26, 1929 in Lowell, MA. Her father, Richard was from Ireland and her mother, Margaret from Scotland. She was a 1947 graduate of Cathedral High School. In 1948 she married Joseph J. Jurkowski and they remained happily married for 64 years. She was employed at Mercy Hospital where she ran the switchboard as a young woman and later worked at Howard Johnson's while raising her four children. She was a principled woman who cared deeply for her family and friends. Betty was a social person who loved to laugh and her friends she held dear to her heart. She enjoyed her family vacations in Wellfleet on Cape Cod and she was always a gracious host and loved to cook. In 2007 she lost a son Joseph J. Jurkowski, Jr. to lung cancer. She will be deeply missed by her loving husband Joe and she leaves behind her three children; Jacinta Connor and her husband Bernie of Cape Coral, FL.; Debra Paquette and her husband George of Easthampton; and Kevin Jurkowski and his wife Terri of Ludlow;. She is survived by her sisters Mary and Theresa and a brother Larry. She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Her family wishes to sincerely thank the staff, especially the outstanding nurses and aides on the fourth floor at Wingate in Springfield as well as the loving caretakers from Beacon Hospice for their warm and compassionate care. A Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrating her life will be held on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 11:30 am in Christ the King Church, followed by burial in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. Ludlow Funeral Home and Cremation Service has been entrusted with the arrangements.
