Obituary for Emma (Pires) Grimes
Emma D. Grimes 99, of Ludlow, died in faith August 1, 2022, after living a long and fulfilling life. Born to the late Ovidio and Maria Pires in Chicopee, MA on July 27, 1923, Emma lived her early life as part of a loving family in Chicopee. A member of the greatest generation, Emma worked at Westinghouse during WWII assembling bomb fuses thus aiding in the war effort. She met the love of her life Gordon “Bud” Grimes at the Sandwich Shop in Ludlow where she was employed, and he frequented after returning from war as an Army Veteran following WWII. They fell deeply in love marrying on January 11, 1947, and then settling in Ludlow where Bud built a home on a piece of land on his father’s farm. Bud died in 1982 but Emma continued to carry him in her heart loving him till the day she died. They soon started a family raising three sons Gordon, Robert, and Gary. She enjoyed many hobbies including embroidery creating many beautiful pieces. Emma was an amazing seamstress working until her retirement from Barclay Furniture of Chicopee, MA in 1978. She especially enjoyed raising her family and her children were the most important things in her life. Emma was a member of several clubs including The Ludlow Woman’s Club and First Church Couples Club. Her family though was most important to her, and she loved the beach enjoying summer vacations with her boys. The highlight of the year were summers at Hampton Beach, Cape Cod, and Old Orchard Beach Maine spending time with her family and friends the Whites and the Peases. Emma was predeceased by Bud, three brothers and a sister and her loving daughter in law Alda Grimes. Besides her sons she leaves behind a sister, Gloria Galis currently of East Longmeadow, daughter in law Robin Grimes, grandchildren, all the loves of her life, Jennifer, Jason, Kelly, Jillian, Sean, Ian, Evan, and Bobbie Leigh, 13 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great-Grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Gather with us to remember her life, tell stories, and comfort each other on Monday August 8, from 5 PM to 7 PM at Ludlow Funeral Home and then a final Goodbye on Tuesday August 9, family and friends are asked to gather directly at St. Elizabeth's Parish for a 10:00am Liturgy of Christian Mass then funeral procession to Hillcrest Park Cemetery for interment. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Ludlow Senior Center 228 State St, Ludlow, MA 01056.
