Born in Evora de Alcobaca, Portugal, son of the late Antonio and Elisa (Rainha) Joao, he came to Ludlow in 1960 with his wife and 4 children in pursuit of the American Dream. He was a hard working family man who was employed at Moore Drop Forge and Van Norman before becoming an entrepreneur. He was a faithful communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church where he was also a former member of Crusistas and a former president and active member of the Festa and the Parish Council. Francisco also enjoyed farming, gardening, and fishing; but his greatest joy in life was dancing with his wife and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Francisco was the beloved husband of the late Lucia M. (Quiterio) Lopes, who predeceased him in 2010; the loving father of Natalia Lopes and Manuel Q. Lopes, both of Ludlow, Zita Lopes-Kerr and husband Brian, of Henderson, NV, and Trinda Nehmer and husband David, of Ludlow and FL; a cherished grandfather to Janice, Gregory, Elissa, Francisco II, Jaclyn, Thomas, and Brandon; the cherished great-grandfather of Connor, Preston, Blake, Alexa Lucia, Liam and Timothy; a dear brother to Diamintino and Fernando Joao, of Indian Orchard, Antonio Joao, of Granby, Maria Vitorino, of Springfield, Conceicao Filipe, of Ludlow and FL, Arnaldo Joao, Luis Joao, Trinda Agostino, and Jack Joao, all of Ludlow, and the late Elvira Rainha, and Manuel and Jose Joao; and also leaves many loving extended family members and dear friends. His family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the entire staff of Baystate Hospice and Baystate Medical Center 3 Springfield, for all of their care and compassion. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 8, 2013 at 10:00am from Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery.
