Obituary for Gil M. Amaral
Gil M. Amaral died on January 24, 2023, in Towson Maryland. He was 92. Born on June 3, 1930 in Rabo de Peixe on Sao Miguel, one of Portugal’s Azores Islands. He was the oldest of three children born to Maria de Jesus Medeiros and Gil Amaral Raposo. He developed an ability to grow almost anything he tried to plant while working on his father’s farm. He served in the Portuguese National Army for a period of time. Upon his discharge he decided to take an opportunity to work on the Island of Bermuda. He began working as a landscaper . He also worked as an assistant greenskeeper at one of the Island’s golf courses. While in Bermuda, a relative, Joe Amaral, suggested that he should come to the United States and work with him at his auto mechanic shop in Ludlow Massachusetts. Still in his 20’s he made the move to Ludlow and began working as an auto mechanic. Joe Amaral also introduced Gil to his future wife, Anna Silva. The couple married in April of 1959. They were married for over 62 years up to the passing of his loving wife. They had two children, Gil Amaral and Ana Maria Whittier. In the early 1960’s Gil began an auto repair shop with his brother-in-law Frank Silva. The business lasted over three decades. After a long and successful career, he retired to his next position as grandfather to five grandchildren, Adam and Emily and Neil, Gregory and Luke. Gil’s children and grandchildren, as well as his extended family, will miss him and will always remember him as the loving and gentle man that he was. Funeral services celebrating Gil’s life will be held on Saturday January 28, 2023, from the Ludlow Funeral Home. Visitation is Saturday morning from 9:00am-10:15am with a Liturgy of Christian Mass celebrated at 11:00am in St. Elizabeth's Church followed by burial in St. Aloysius Cemetery.
