Obituary for Gloria (Pereira) Fonseca
Gloria (Pereira) Fonseca, beloved wife of the late Anthony Fonseca, entered into eternal rest on Monday, May 25, 2009. Born in Ludlow on July 14, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Francisco and Albertina Pereira. Gloria is survived by her daughter Mary Ann Burke of Somers, CT, her son Frank and his wife Cindi (Fijal) and their children Phillip and Rachel also of Ludlow. Left to mourn are sister Hazel and her husband Americo (Scorpy) Dias. Gloria was predeceased by her brothers Francisco, Porfirio, Antonio, and by her sister Carmen (Connie) Esteves. Her son-in-law Francis A. “Roxy” Burke also died previously. She is now survived by her 2 sisters-in-law Dorothea (Dolly) Pereira, and Philomena (Phoebe) Pereira and Adelaide Henry and a brother-in-law Americo “Coco” Esteves. Her extended family, Francis A. Burke, III and his wife Susan of Gordonsville, VA, Roxann Karchner and her husband Rod of Charlotte, N.C., and Mark and Tracy Burke of Breckenridge, CO also mourn her loss. Many nieces and nephews also grieve her passing. Gloria grew up in Ludlow where she lived most of her life with the exception of eight years lived in Chicopee, Tony’s home town. In 1965, she returned to stay. A graduate of Ludlow High School Class of 1940, she went to work first at Sickles in Chicopee then at the American Bosch until 1956. Throughout her life, Gloria was an avid reader and an eager learner. As a homemaker she was an excellent cook and baker. Gloria also enjoyed other personal interests in cake decorating, millinery, and hairstyling, as evidence by her completion of a two year course of study at the Mansfield School of Beauty in Springfield. All this was accomplished while raising her family and caring for her “special” brother, Pago, who lived with her for over fifty years. Funeral services will be held Friday morning May 29, 2009 at 9:00 AM from Ludlow Funeral Home with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Church at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow in St. Aloysius Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday evening from 4-7 PM.
