Obituary for Helder M. Nunes
Helder Nunes, 62, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully on June 15th, 2008, surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancer. Born in Guarda, Portugal, son of the late Manuel and Maria Santos. He has lived in Ludlow since 1974 where he was a faithful communicant of Our Lady of Fatima and St. John the Baptist Parishes. Helder was the Founder and President of H.M. Nunes and Sons Construction Company in Ludlow, started in 1987. He served as military police in Portugal during his tour in the Portuguese Army. He was a participant of the Cursillio Movement at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Ludlow. Helder was also a member of the Gremio Lusitano Club, a founding member of the Convivio dos Beiros, Ludlow, and a retired member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 98. Helder was the beloved husband of 34 years to Maria Amelia Nunes; a loving father to Armand Nunes and Helder Filipe Nunes and his wife Kari Ann, all of Ludlow; a cherished grandfather to Annabella Nicole, Leo Manuel, and Ian Filipe; a dear brother to Francisco, Carlos, Joao and Helena Nunes, Soledade Gomes, Eugenia Quelhas, all of Guarda, Portugal, and Lisette Nunes, of Manteigas, Portugal; cherished brother in-law to Maria Ascencao Cruz, of Coimbra, Antonio Amaral, of Aldeia Rica, Jose Nunes of Celorico da Beira, and the late Armando L. Amaral of Ludlow, he also leaves several nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and many dear friends including the entire Neves Family, of Holyoke and surrounding areas, Carlos and Ana Maria Ribeiro, of Ludlow, and Fernando and Gina Silva, also of Ludlow. Helder’s family also wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to all of the many people who have showed their care and support for them over the last difficult years of his life. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning, June 18th, 2008 at 8:00am from the Ludlow Funeral Home with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial. Visiting hours are Tuesday evening from 4-7pm. Memorial donations may be made in Helder’s memory to the Lahey Clinic, Philanthropy, F.B.O Pulmonary Dept. 60 Mall Road Burlington, MA 01805.Â
