Obituary for Helena (Alegria) Pederneira
Helena Alegria Pederneira, 67, of Ludlow, MA, passed away just before Sunday lunch at her five star “hotel” Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on Sunday, June 23, 2019. After being granted permission to let go by her daughter, Helena waited until her loved ones left the room and she passed peacefully while listening to Portuguese fado music on her iPad. She was born November 28, 1951 in Samora Correia, Portugal to the late Vítor Manuel Conde Alegria and the late Henriqueta Malico Romão. She married her first love Jose Lemos Pederneira at age 18 in Samora Correia, Portugal and they emigrated to the USA in 1974 with two small children and just a few bucks in their pockets. Prior to being diagnosed with interstitial lung disease, Helena worked at Carando in Springfield, MA. On February 26, 2018 she received a double lung transplant and was able to love her family for 16 more months. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Ludlow, MA. Although she was not able to attend church she often visited the Fatima Shrine in Hamden, MA to light candles and pray. She was a proud member of the Gremio Lusitano Club in Ludlow, MA. She was extremely proud to be a Candy Crush Master (Level 2191). She was an Expert Facebook Commentator and Sesame Street English Writer. She was an unpaid Taxi Driver and a Comedienne. She was most proud of being a Soccer and Dance Mom and Grandmom. She will be sadly missed by so many including her son David Pederneira of Ludlow, MA. Daughter Ana Pederneira Ferris and son-in-law Benjamin Ferris of Ludlow, MA. Son Daniel Pederneira and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Bard of Broad Brook, CT. Grandchildren Patrick, Maya, Rayna, Phillipe, and Lillian. Stepmother Perlina Alegria of Portugal and mother-in-law Emilia de Oliveira Lemos of Portugal. Sister Dora Alberto of Indian Orchard, MA and brother Victor Alegria of Portugal. Brother-in-laws José Alberto of Ludlow, MA and João Augusto Pederneira of Portugal. Sister-in-laws Maria Emilia Alegria of Portugal and Sofia Serra of Portugal. Cousins Guilhermina Romão da Fonseca of Portugal and Vasco da Fonseca of Portugal. Nephews Frank, Eddy, Junior, João Alexandre, João Eduardo, and Filipe. Many grandnephews, grandnieces, great grandnephews, and great grandnieces. And lastly her raving fans the “Diniz” Clan (you know who you are). Love4Lena. She was predeceased by her grandparents Joaquina da Silva Malico and Francisco Romão Pernes, and her aunt and uncle Augusta da Conceição Bernandes and António Malico Romão who all raised her, father-in-law Joaquim Pederneira, brother João Alegria, and nephew Pedro Miguel Alegria all of Portugal. Funeral services will be held on Friday June 28, 2019 from the Ludlow Funeral Home. Visiting hours are Friday morning from 8:15-10:15am with a Liturgy of Christian Mass celebrated at 11:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery.
