Obituary for Homer P Brunelle
Homer P, Brunelle, 101, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully at a Wilbraham Nursing Home.  Homer was born in Ludlow on June 29, 1908 to Helene and Victor Brunelle, the third child of what grew to a family of eight.  At the age of 14, he received a special permit which allowed him to work at the Ludlow Mills where he worked for fifty years.  In 1929, he married Mary Barna and he and “Mae” became a team for the next 61 years until her death in 1990.  Homer was happiest at their camp, where the family gathered every weekend and enjoyed countless card games, horseshoes, family celebrations and non-stop laughter.  Homer’s other pleasures included showing early movies at family gatherings, attending auctions to buy that hidden treasure, driving his truck, playing with their pet monkey, Mickey, sharing stories about the history of Ludlow and teasing his wonderful caregivers at Wingate.   He was a lifetime member of the Ludlow Fish and Game Club.  In 2008, he was honored with Ludlow’s Golden Cane award as the town’s oldest resident.  Homer’s gruff exterior could not hide how much he loved and cared about people, and children were captivated by the unique person he was.  Homer will be deeply  missed by a loving brother, Ernie, and his many nephews and nieces, including John and Ronnie McCarthy of Wilbraham, Betty and Bill Kaeding of Chicopee, Joan and Bill Hill of Hillsboro, OR, and Joyce and George Pazianos of Washington, D.C.  Other nieces and nephews scattered throughout the country will hold him in their hearts and smile at the role “Uncle Homer” played in their lives.  Funeral services for Homer will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 9 A.M. from the Ludlow Funeral Home, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial in St. Cecelia’s Church, Wilbraham at 10, followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours are Friday, Jan. 8 from 4- 7 PM.  Donations may be made in Homer’s memory to the Charity of One’s Choice.
