Obituary for Homer Rene Dubois
Homer Rene Dubois, 98, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 3rd, at his home of 69 years of his 71 year marriage to his wife Mae. He was born in Ludlow to Rene Dubois and Ethelyn (Davies) Dubois along with his three sisters; Vivian Caron, and the late Lauretta Raymond, and Elaine Kogut. He was married to Mary “Mae” (Macdonald) Dubois for 71 years and his favorite saying about her was “she came over from Scotland on a banana boat in high buttoned shoes”. Homer was left handed and Mae was his right hand throughout his life and long fire career. Together they had 3 children; Nancy Fernandes, of Ludlow, Suzanne Parker, of Springfield, and Rene Dubois, of Monson; 6 grandchildren Amanda Mistalski (Gary) of Wilbraham, Andrew Fernandes (Chrissy) of Ludlow, Christopher Fernandes of Springfield, Mary Fernandes of Ludlow, Ethan Dubois (Maggie) of Monson, and Avery Dubois of Monson; 4 great-grandchildren Kylie and Kenzie Plasse of Ludlow, and Gray and Adaline Mistalski of Wilbraham. Homer was a United States Navy Veteran proudly serving during WWII on the destroyer Siogourney in the South Pacific Ocean. Upon returning from service, he was a member of the Ludlow Fire Department serving as Ludlow Fire Chief for the last 26 years of his career. Within the community, he was a 50 year member of the Ludlow Lions Club and longtime member of Ludlow Country Club. Homer was perpetually in motion. After his golf game, which he played 4 times a week into his 90’s, you might see him on his lawn mower or maintaining the pool. He loved his sweets, especially apple pie which had to have no hard chunks, it must be soft. But vegetables “forget them”; he used to explain his feelings on salad by saying “I am not a rabbit”. He will be sadly missed. Whenever anyone needed a friend or helping hand, call Homer; needed to know a little old history of Ludlow, give Homer a minute and you will have it; or needed an old screw or pipe tool, it is probably in the cellar - neatly in a jar on a shelf. St. Peter, open your pearly gates for Homer and please save a place for his wife Mae beside him. Walk Through No Contact Visitation for Chief Homer Dubois will be held on Thursday, April 8th from 4:30-7:00pm in Ludlow Funeral Home. Friends and Family may then gather on Friday, April 9th directly in Island Pond Cemetery for 12:00pm committal services with Naval and Fire Department Honors. Due to Covid Restrictions, a private procession will take place from the funeral home to the cemetery. A memorial Mass and Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to be announced once restrictions are lifted.
