Obituary for Ilda Goncalves
Ilda Goncalves, 85, of Ludlow, died on August 28, 2013. Born in Ludlow, daughter of the late Manuel and Maria (Dias) Goncalves, she was raised in Travassos da Cha and returned to Ludlow in 1953. She worked for 16 years at Latrique Brassiere in the Ludlow Mills and then for Springfield Wire before retiring. Ilda was a faithful and devoted communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church and a member of the Portuguese American Citizens and Gremio Lusitano Clubs. She loved to crochet, tend to her flower gardens and was always hospitable; particularly when cooking for her family and friends; but her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ilda was the beloved wife of 64 years to Lavalier Goncalves; a loving mother to Dennis Goncalves and wife Matilde, of R.I., and Isabel Martins and partner Fernando Barroso, of Ludlow; a devoted grandmother to Steven Martins and wife Sharon, of Ludlow, Lauren Maheras and husband Austin, of R.I., Jeffrey Martins and wife Melissa, of Belchertown, and Matthew Goncalves and wife Meredith, of R.I.; a cherished great-grandmother to Christian, Adrian, Grace, Sophia, and Jaxson; a dear sister to Arminda Dias, and the late John Goncalves and Idalina Goncalves; and also leaves many loving extended family members and dear friends. Funeral services are on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at 8:45am from Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in St. Aloysius Cemetery. Visiting hours are on Monday from 3-6pm. Â
