Obituary for James Bernardo
James Bernardo, 77, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2013, with his beloved family by his side.  Son of the late Antonio and Beatrice (Fontes) Bernardo, he was born in Ludlow and was a lifelong resident and faithful communicant of St. Elizabeth Parish.  James was a United States Navy Veteran who proudly served his country for eight years.  He graduated from Trade High School and  worked at Monsanto as a mill rite from 1956 until his retirement in 1998.
James loved working with his hands, his passion being mill work and cabinetry.  He was an avid sportsman and he enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially recently with Ken Sr. and Ken Jr.  James belonged to many bowling leagues.  He also enjoyed camping with his friends and family.  He was a proud member of the Moose Lodge in Chicopee and the Ludlow Fish & Game Club.  He  generously contributed to several charities including the American Cancer Society, in support of his family members.
James was the beloved husband of 15 years to Alberta Bernardo; loving step-father to Kathleen Liro and husband Louis, Patrick Walsh, Brennan Walsh, and Damian Walsh and wife Robin; cherished grandfather to Dr. Christina Liro, D.O., Jennifer Stanton and husband Nathan, and Master Sean Walsh.  He was a dear brother to Marian Rodrigues and husband Olimpio, Joseph Bernardo, Edwina Grimaldi and husband Nicholas, Anthony Bernardo and wife Nascimenta, Manuel Bernardo and friend Valerie, and Geraldine Cuthbert, who was also his very best friend. His predeceased brothers include Jack, Ceasar, Frank, and Arlindo Bernardo.  James was a loving Godfather to Lisa Teixeira, husband Alan, children Alysse & Aryelle; James Bernardo, wife Kathleen, children James, Victoria, & Veronica; Beatrice Abrahamson, husband Paul, children Kyle, & Kara.  James also leaves several loving nieces, nephews, dear friends, and wonderful neighbors.  
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 3, at 8 am from Ludlow Funeral Home and Cremation Tribute Center with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 am in St. Elizabeth Parish.  Visiting hours are on Tuesday, July 2, from 5-8 pm.
Burial will be held on Friday, July 5th at 11:00am in Island Pond Cemetery 


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in James' memory to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude's Children's Research Center.
