Obituary for James Mendes
James Mendes, 83, died peacefully from a short illness on Oct. 10, 2019. James was born in Ludlow on April 22,1936, the youngest of five children born to Albert and Barbara (Nunes) Mendes. In 1956 during the Korean War, James enlisted in the US Navy, serving as a Gunners Mate on the USS Remey(688) until 1959. After being honorably discharged from the service, he returned to Western Mass where he began work at the John H. Breck Company as a machine operator. Many years later, he became employed by Suburban Propane as a propane technician. He was married to Alice (Bojan) Mendes in 1961, and remained living in Ludlow. James retired in the late 1990’s and began splitting his residency between their homes in Ludlow and Hernando, FL, where he enjoyed golf, fishing, playing cards, spending time with family, and making new friends. He was a life-long member of the Ludlow Polish American Citizens Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the Gremio Lusitano Club. James was predeceased by his parents Albert and Barbara, his brothers Antonio and Albert (Birdie), and his youngest son Todd. He is survived by his wife Alice, sons Dean and Mark, sister Barbara, brother Manuel, and grandchildren Christian, Bryanna, and Cory, along with numerous nephews, nieces, in-laws, and friends. Funeral services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
