James Raymond Peter Snyder, Jr., known to everyone as “Pete,” left this earth peacefully at his home on August 6, 2025, surrounded by his loving family and with a view of the lake that he loved so much.
Pete was born in Kinderhook, NY, on July 20, 1943. He was the oldest son of Helen and James Raymond Peter Snyder, Sr., of Kinderhook, NY.
Pete was a Vietnam veteran who served in the United States Army’s 196th Light Infantry Brigade. After serving his country, he worked at AT&T in Springfield, MA, for 31 years.
Pete is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Snyder; his children, Heather, Sean, Joseph and Cole Kenneally, and Maura, Amy, Andrew and Peter Snyder; his sisters, Nan, Remi, Trudy, Bridget and Meg; and his brothers, John and Joseph.
Pete was an avid runner, bicyclist, and basketball player. He had an impeccable mid-range jump shot and never tired of playing pickup ball with the neighborhood kids. He also never met a referee he agreed with.
Pete’s pride and joy was living in his peaceful lake home in Monson, where he enjoyed years of swimming, hiking, and boating with his grandchildren and all the dogs in the immediate vicinity. He also loved throwing parties on the Fourth of July, when he would play music as loud as possible in an attempt to drive the neighbors crazy.
Pete loved ice cream, the New York Yankees, his old guitar, Neil Young, Bob Marley, a good book, and soaking up the sun on a warm summer day. And he used to love that Econoline van. But most of all, he loved his family—every one of them.
Wherever Pete went, laughter was never far behind. He had enough life in him for ten people, and he lived all of it. There was no one like him, and he will be dearly missed.
Visiting hours for Pete will be held on Friday, August 15, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Ludlow Funeral Home. Funeral services are on Saturday, August 16, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home concluding with a Celebration of Life service at 11:00am. Burial will be held privately at the family's convenience.
