Obituary for Jane Louise Machado

Jane Louise (Brown) Machado, 94, of Ludlow passed away at Mary’s Meadow in Holyoke on January 9, 2026. She was born in Springfield to Jane (Legacy) & L. Lyman Brown on June 3, 1931. She attended Holy Name grammar school and had fond memories of walking home for lunch in the winter to skate on the rink her dad made in their yard. Starting at 14, Jane worked at Lobels, a shoe store in downtown Springfield. After graduating from Cathedral High School, she worked for New England Telephone Co. and married Charles Machado in 1954. She became a stay-at-home mom when her children were born.

Her family was everything to her. She was a room mother, a 4-H Leader, she organized the family’s participation in the area fairs & cheered for her son Jim’s sports teams. As her children grew, she went back to work at Uncle Bob’s General Store in Ludlow, then at the main Office of A&P Supermarkets and finally she went back to the phone company retiring from the AT&T overseas calling center where she was an operator.

An avid Bingo player, Jane was lucky to win on occasion going with Charlie several nights a week. Jane was a wanna be traveler married to a homebody but did manage to get in a yearly family trip to Lake George, a few trips to Disney, some bus tours, a cruise to Bermuda (in spite of severe sea sickness) and a trip to Yellowstone National Park with her son & daughter-in-law.

Jane was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Charlie; her grandson Tim Phelon; her parents and her siblings Donald and Robert Brown. She leaves her children: Sue Phelon & her husband Bill of Westfield, Gail Warren and Jim Machado & his wife Pam of Ludlow; her grandchildren Scott Phelon & his wife Courtney, Kelly Lucas & her husband Chris and James Warren-Dec & his spouse Emry of Westfield and Ashley LeBlanc &; her husband Tommy of Ludlow. She also leaves her 10 great grandchildren: Theodore, Will, Charlie, Rhylen, Patrick, Matthew, Daniel,TJ, Claire and Kya.

Janes’ family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Kindhands Care at Home, especially Joanne, and also the staff at Mary’s Meadows at Providence Place for the exceptional care they provided Jane during her time with them.

Funeral Services for both Jane & Charlie will be held privately by their family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Ludlow Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jane & Charlies memory can be sent to: Alzheimer's Association @ www.alz.org.
