Obituary for Joaquim Afonso Crespo
Joaquim Afonso Crespo, 76 of Ludlow, died Thursday September 24, 2009 surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle against brain cancer. Joaquim was the beloved husband of Arminda Crespo for 43 years who died in 2003 and beloved father to his sons Americo and Mario who predeceased him in 1961 and 1962, respectively.  He was born in Padernelos, Portugal on May 10, 1933, the son of the late Antonio and Olimpia (Ferreira) Crespo.  Joaquim moved to the United States in 1966 and resided in Ludlow for the last 42 years.  He retired from the Danaher Tool Company after 32 years as a machine operator.  Joaquim was a wonderful father and “Papa” who cherished his family and will be greatly missed.  He loved playing with his grandchildren and spending time with his family and friends.  Joaquim was an expert gardener and enjoyed watching soccer on Sunday afternoons.   Joaquim served in the Portuguese Army and is a member of the Gremino Lusitano Club. Joaquim was a kind person who always found the good in people, helped those who needed him and the less fortunate.   His kindness and goodwill always prevailed even when he was losing his battle with brain cancer. Joaquim always managed to comfort his family, show a kind smile, or do a kind gesture even though his body was failing him.  Joaquim leaves behind his son, Gervasio Crespo and his wife Colleen with whom he resided with this past year and his daughter Adelina Crespo, all of Ludlow.  He also leaves his two grandchildren who were the joy of his life, Erica Paulina and Alexander Joaquim.  They will forever dearly miss their “Papa.” He was predeceased by his brother Americo who died in 1982.  He leaves behind his loving brother who was always by his side Augusto Crespo and his wife Laurinda of Ludlow, his sister Maria and her husband Antonio Goncalves of Ludlow, and his brother Antonio and Maria Crespo of Chaves, Portugal.   He also leaves his loving sister-in-laws Ana Afonso and Maria Mendes of Ludlow, brother-in-laws Germano and his wife Maria Oliveria and Mario and his wife Maria Oliveria also of Ludlow as well as many nieces, nephews, and God children.  The family wishes to thank the compassionate staff at Wingate of Wilbraham, Mercy Medical Center as well as Dr. Ochs, Dr. Matin and Dr. Kalia for the extraordinary care they provided to their father during his illness.  Funeral services will be on Monday, September 28, 2009 at 9am from Ludlow Funeral Home with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Mary of the Assumption Church followed by burial in St. Aloysius Cemetery.  Visitation will be on Sunday afternoon from 3-6pm.
