Joaquim “Jack” Mateus, 78, of Ludlow passed away peacefully on January 29, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Benedita, Portugal, he was the son of the late Manuel and Laurinda Mateus. Jack immigrated to the Indian Orchard area in 1972, moving to Ludlow in 1974. Jack was the beloved husband of Alice Mateus for 54 years, loving father to Nuno (Kathleen) and George (Tina), and devoted grandfather to Bella, Finn, Rowan, and Jackson. He leaves his dear sisters Gina Barreiro (Orlando) and Incarnacao Carvalho (Henrique) of Portugal, Carolina Palatino (Manuel) and brother Jose Mateus both of Ludlow. He also leaves many brothers and sisters in-laws as well as many nieces and nephews both here and in Portugal. Jack worked for many years at Chapman Valves as well as Jahn Faundry before starting his own masonry business, J.A.N. Mason. He was a master of his craft and very proud of his work. You can easily spot his works throughout all of Ludlow and the surrounding towns due to the creativity of his bricklaying. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and loved gardening, antiquing and wine making. His “adega” was his pride and joy. He was a Benefica soccer enthusiast and always made sure to watch his team. Jack also loved his trips to Hampton Beach and vacations back to Portugal. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday February 4, 2025. Visitation is Tuesday morning from 8:45-10:15am with a Liturgy of Christian Mass celebrated at 11:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association and/or the Michael J. Dias foundation.
