Obituary for Joe Almeida
Joe Almeida, 82, of Springfield passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 15, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Ludlow to the late Domingos and Maria (Belleza) Almeida, he was a long time Ludlow resident and faithful communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Parish. Joe worked for many years at the former Roy M. Wright Construction Company in Springfield and belonged to the International Union of Operating Engineers. He served his country honorably as an Airborne Ranger in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, he was proud of his military service and enjoyed the reunions with his fellow Rangers. He leaves his loving children; Gary Almeida his wife Cheryl and their children, Matthew, Brian and Amy all of Norwell, MA. David Almeida his wife Cheryl and their children, Christopher and Joseph all of Ludlow and Cheryl Bamber her husband Scott and their children Jamie and Sean of Palmer as well as his adored great-grandson Christopher; his caring twin sister Margaret Mathias of Ludlow, sisters Mary Almeida of Ludlow and Amy Kania of Rhode Island and a brother Casey Almeida of Ludlow. Sadly Joe was predeceased by his brothers Antonio and Jerry and his sisters Julia, Virginia and Gussie. His family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff at the Holyoke Soldiers Home, for the compassionate care they gave to Joe during his stay there, as well as the nurses at Holyoke Hospice. Funeral services with Military Honors for Joe will be held on Monday March 19, 2012 at 8:30am from the Ludlow Funeral Home followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 9:30am in Our Lady of Fatima Church with interment in Island Pond Cemetery. Visiting hours are Sunday evening from 4:00-6:00pm. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made in Joe’s memory to the Holyoke Soldiers Home, Cherry St. Holyoke, MA. 01040.
