Obituary for John "Jack" Alves

John “Jack” Alves, 81, of Ludlow, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, with his loving family by his side. He was born in Ludlow on March 26, 1945. He was predeceased by his parents Alexander and Mabel (Almeida) Alves and his brother William Alves.

Jack was a graduate of Ludlow High School and Westfield State College. A proud United States Army veteran, he served his country from 1968 to 1970 during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart for his service. Following his military career, he became the owner and inspector of Alves Inspection.

Jack was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved gardening, birdwatching, and spending time at the beach. He loved music and sharing his taste for “The Grateful Dead “, “Bob Dylan”, and “The Band”. A true foodie, he enjoyed dining out as much as he loved sharing a home-cooked meal with family. He was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He had a deep respect for animals and nature and was happiest outdoors.

In recent years, Jack especially enjoyed spending time with family in Otis, where he became well known among the neighbors and could often be found chatting with friends on the deck. Within the community, he was a member of the Polish American Citizens Club and the Ludlow Fish and Game Club. He also served for several years on the Conservation Commission, where he famously championed the protection of the infamous salamander.

Jack was the loving father of Amber Bach and her husband, Christian, of Southwick; devoted grandfather of Cassaundra and Christian Bach; beloved brother of Robert Alves, Marsha Tucker, and Mia Alves; and cherished uncle, cousin, and friend to many extended family members and dear friends. Jack’s family also wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at Berkshire Rehab and Skilled Care Center for the exceptional care that they provided to him for the past 9 years

Funeral services for Jack will be held on Saturday, June 13. Visiting hours will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Ludlow Funeral Home, concluding with a Celebration of Life service at 12:00 p.m., followed by burial with Military Honors at St. Aloysius Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack’s memory to Smile Like Jack 62 School St. Westfield, Ma. 01085 (smilelikejack.com)
